Apple has removed WhatsApp and Threads from its app store in China. The country’s internet watchdog ordered the removal, citing national security concerns. Apple stated that they are obligated to follow the laws of the countries where they operate, even if they disagree. The apps, owned by Meta, were already blocked in China and not widely used. Other Western social media apps like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger are still available on Apple’s China app store. Apple’s decision comes as iPhone sales in China have decreased by 10% in the first quarter of this year.
