Apple is hoping that its upcoming AI features will boost iPhone sales in China, but there’s a hurdle. ChatGPT, set to be integrated into Siri, is banned in China. Apple showcased its proprietary technology called Apple Intelligence, announcing a partnership with OpenAI to use ChatGPT in a limited capacity. China has regulations on the generative AI technology that powers these services. Apple is reportedly looking for a Chinese AI partner but has not reached a deal yet. The need for a partner arises as Apple’s smartphone sales decreased, particularly in China. In contrast, Huawei’s smartphone sales grew by 70% in the first quarter.
