The US is experiencing its largest summer Covid wave in at least two years
US Faces Significant Surge in Covid Cases #
The US is experiencing a significant surge in Covid-19 cases, with high viral activity detected in wastewater across the country. Experts anticipate that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s wastewater dashboard will confirm that viral activity levels are the highest since January 2022 when tracking began. Emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and deaths are also increasing, although not as sharply as infections. Wastewater analysis provides valuable insights into the spread of the virus, as the amount of virus detected correlates with the number of infected individuals in an area. The rise in cases is attributed to waning immunity and the emergence of new variants. The situation is concerning as schools begin to reopen, providing ample opportunities for the virus to spread. While the availability of updated vaccines designed to better protect against the new variants is eagerly awaited, it is yet to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. According to experts, the updated shots from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are expected to be ready in the coming weeks. In the meantime, individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated, wear N95 or KN95 masks in crowded indoor areas, and consider procuring Covid-19 tests.
