What are stock market holidays?

Market holidays are any day that is not a weekend when the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq closes for the day. This holiday usually falls around Thanksgiving or Christmas.

The stock market may remain open on certain holidays or the days near them, but the bond market will close or stay closed. The markets may close on national mourning days, such as when the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq honored the late President George H.W. Bush died in 2018.

The Friday preceding a holiday that falls on a Saturday is usually a holiday for the stock market. If the holiday falls on a weekend, the markets will close the Monday following.

The regular hours of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq are from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. ET Monday through Friday. Weekends are market-free.
